FRESH Lemon Juice and Baking Soda Recipe
By Dr. Grayson Blom
The Recipe:
1. 1 Large Lemon or 2 Small Lemons
2. 1/4 tsp. or Less Baking Soda (aluminum free)
3. 1 32oz. Wide Mouth Mason Jar
4. Water
I like to roll out the lemons to get the flesh loose before juicing and I always juice the lemon using my hand rather than a juicer into a standard 32 oz. Mason jar (use a juicer if you like). Cut the lemon in half and juice into the Mason jar. Next add 1/4 tsp. baking soda or less. There will be fizzing chemical reaction as the baking soda (bicarbonate) mixes with the lemon juice. Swirl the liquid around until done fizzing. Then I add a few ice cubes and fill the Mason jar with clean filtered water and then enjoy.
You can scale the recipe up or down to your liking. I have experimented with different ratios of ingredients and the above ratios are best in my opinion. I should also point out that the baking soda will take away a lot of the sourness of the lemon leaving you with a pleasant refreshing drink.

FRESH Lemon Juice and Baking Soda as Pre and Post Workout
I have been using lemon juice with baking soda as a pre and post workout supplement for years and it will help give you more energy and to push even harder when exercising. Please note that fresh lemon juice and baking soda is a good anytime drink, so don’t think it is only good for exercise situations. I would also like to mention fresh lemon juice and baking soda is the most Alkalizing drink I know of.
The reason why lemon juice and baking soda is a good pre/post workout drink is that it provides the body with good raw materials for exercise such as calcium and magnesium which are required to contract and properly relax muscle. It contains sodium and potassium to assist your nerves in firing your muscles to perfection. It contains FRESH vitamin C as an antioxidant to help neutralize free radicals and assist your immune system, as well as facilitate energy production for peak performance et.al. Also it is of note that intense exercise will cause the body’s pH to become more acidic (lower pH) and lemon juice and bicarbonate will provide the raw materials to neutralize this so you can work out harder and longer to achieve your goals.
A Few More Thoughts
When you look at what is in Gatorade you will see that it contains many artificial ingredients more or less depending on the flavor, a ton of SUGAR, and other garbage that is not good for your body, just read the label!! Please also note fresh whole foods such as lemon will always be 10,000x better for you than processed, pasteurized, life less, artificial garbage, not to mention all the plastic waste created. A Mason jar can be used again and again.
I would also like to point out that the Mason jar is arguably the most versatile container available and is the original go anywhere travel bottle. Glass is also one of the most inert substances we know of. Most people do not know that ALL plastic bottles will leach toxic chemicals into the beverages they contain more or less depending on the beverage and depending on the type of plastic. Also interesting is that a Nalgene bottle is a toxic plastic version of a Mason jar. The only down side is the Mason jar is made of glass so it can break, whereas a Nalgene bottle is incredibly durable. Just realize there is a trade-off.
It should go without saying but just in case: The acidity of lemon juice can damage the enamel of your teeth so be sure and rinse you mouth out or swish some fresh water around in your mouth when finished with the drink, and better still brush and floss your teeth, make your dentist proud.
